SUMMARY:A Martyr
DESCRIPTION:Looking back at the Civil War and looking ahead in fear at WWII\, Florence Price’s seldom-heard masterwork Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight sets Vachel Lindsay’s poem of the same name. Period memorial music from 1865\, songs composed immediately upon Lincoln’s death\, complete the program.

SUMMARY:Actus Tragicus
DESCRIPTION:Bach and others\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of J. S. Bach’s most important works\, Cantata 106 “Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit\,” forms the centerpiece of this concert. With texts that come from both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament\, as well as several hymns\, this funeral cantata is filled with hope. These texts inspire the Renaissance and contemporary selections that comprise the remainder of the program\, including a setting by Caspar Othmayr of the last words of Martin Luther.

SUMMARY:Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Mozart a la Czerny\n\n\n\n\n\nMuch legend and fiction surround Mozart’s final days while he wrote his Requiem Mass. What is certain is that this is a masterwork. We will perform this summation of Mozart’s creative genius in the traditional completion by Franz Süssmayr. Instead of orchestral accompaniment\, however\, we will share a more intimate version using famed Czech-Austrian composer and pedagogue Carl Czerny’s four-hand piano transcription.

SUMMARY:Matters of Life & Death
DESCRIPTION:Words of Whitman\n\n\n\n\n\nFew poets have captured the breadth\, the embodiment\, and the joy of every aspect of human existence quite the way Walt Whitman did. Through his texts\, we see how he reveled in and marveled at human life—and death. Settings of portions of his Lincoln elegy—When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d—and Whispers of Heavenly Death by such living composers as Dan Locklair and Stephen Chatman are paired with Vincent Persichetti’s exuberant and life-affirming Celebrations.
